THE leader of Scotland's largest local authority has given his personal assurance that rubbish and health hazards will not pile up on city streets in the event of a strike by cleansing staff.

As unions and council chiefs re-enter last ditch talks today to avert a prolonged strike, Glasgow City Council leader Steven Purcell said failure of the workforce to accept and embrace the changes - which see staff work four days on, four days of - would fail to win the support of a public coming to terms with the biggest economic downturn in living memory.
