THE Higher Education Funding Council of England's consultation document on the forthcoming Research Excellence Framework (REF), published last week, has been widely condemned for its insistence that, in all subjects, 25per cent of the score will be on the "impact" of research; that is, roughly, its direct contribution to the economy.

Many of the humanities and pure sciences have no such impact to speak of: their value lies in the pursuit of knowledge for its own sake and the (wholly unpredictable) future developments, intellectual or practical, they may engender, perhaps decades later.
