Summary

I AM puzzled by the position of the Scottish Liberal Democrats on Sewel motions. When the Scottish Parliament chooses by a Sewel motion to send legislation to the UK Parliament, it is choosing to send it to a very different body. The Scottish Parliament has no majority party - Labour must compromise with their Liberal Democrat coalition partners or with others to pass legislation. The House of Commons is composed almost twothirds of Labour members, and Labour need compromise with no-one on the legislation it passes.

Why have the Liberal Democrat members of the Scottish Parliament chosen to send key matters of policy, such as civil partnerships, the Scottish court system and the police, from the Scottish Parliament, where they have considerable power, to the UK Parliament, where they have none?
