George Quar - the family name is of Huguenot origin - was a man of many talents, the greatest of which was a cheeriness which I have never seen matched in anybody else. He could cheer you up in the depths of whatever slough of despond you or anybody else found themselves in. He did it even when he himself had much more important problems than you. He did it through his last years of battling against the variety of cancers which afflicted him.

I said many talents. One was for adventure. George was born in Maryhill, where he was brought up before his family moved to Priesthill. The family was a talented and intelligent one.
