Rafael Eitan, the straight-talking, earthy former Israeli army chief and cabinet minister who pushed a hard-line view on Palestinians, died on Tuesday after being washed into the stormy Mediterranean Sea. He was 75.

Eitan, known to Israelis by his nickname "Raful," was working on expanding the southern port of Ashdod when he was swept off a breakwater, port officials said. Eitan was on the breakwater to check whether equipment had been damaged in a storm.
