Claudio Ranieri went to great lengths yesterday to stress the unpredictability of football. However, as far as his job is concerned, there will be no surprises come the end of this turbulent season. Even if Chelsea were to overturn Monaco's considerable advantage at Stamford Bridge this evening and triumph in the ensuing European Cup final, Ranieri's contract will still be terminated.

"My destiny is already decided," confirmed the Chelsea manager on the eve of the Champions' League semi-final return leg. Two goals and a clean sheet will right the wrongs of a fortnight ago in Monte Carlo but Ranieri is not expecting any reprieve as far as his own future is concerned. "I knew this was going to happen from the start. I didn't know the name of the next coach. Now I know the name. Everybody knows."
