I WAS rather surprised by the implications in the letter by Bill Brown (Letters, April 27) that the armed services (and others) are more likely to be loyal because of a picture on the wall.
What is surely most interesting in the current system of the monarchy is twofold. First, oaths are taken to an individual (the current monarch) and her 'heirs and successors'. That is, those taking the oath are binding themselves, in theory, to someone not yet born who might come to the throne as a toddler. The alternative is not, as the letter suggests, an oath to a Prime Minister or President but rather (as is the norm in most other nations) either to that nation's constitution or to 'the people' of the nation.See the full content of this document
