IT'S 56 years today since the opening ceremony for London, host of the post war XIV Olympiad. The aggressors, Germany and Japan, were excluded, but there was a then-record 59 countries and 139 events. This year more than 200 countries are expected to contest more than 300 events.
The Games' founder, Baron Pierre de Coubertin, had died since the previous Games in Berlin, and his heart was buried at Olympia, in Greece.See the full content of this document
