Summary

Given the storms of what passed for summer, more than a few farmers will be glad to see what was left of their harvest gathered safely in. Sometimes it can seem that there is precious little for which to give thanks when harvest thanksgiving comes round. And yet since before the Romans made offerings to their goddess Ceres, man has thought it wise to mark the end of the crop season with some form of celebration.

These occasions are celebrated in every continent, but perhaps nowhere with quite the enthusiasm of North America. This dates back to 1621, when the recently-arrived pilgrims endured a particularly difficult first year. Their very survival in the new world depended on a good autumn harvest - and it was a bumper one. They gathered the crop, built homes in the wilderness, made friends with their neighbours and gave thanks. The tradition grew over the next two centuries until President Abraham Lincoln declared it a national holiday. It remains one of the most popular family holidays on the calendar.
