US forces battled their way into the heart of one of Iraq's key rebel strongholds yesterday in the first of a series of major offensives to regain control of areas lost to the insurgents.

More than 100 rebels were killed and 37 captured in the fighting in Samarra, 60 miles north of Baghdad.
