LIKE much of life, much of death comes down to money. The figures published by the Office of National Statistics yesterday confirm the long-held view among academics and clinicians that wealth equals health, and the poor and the poorly are all too often the same.

Although Scotland's economy has grown at broadly the same pace as in other parts of the UK, the distribution of wealth and health gains has not been even in society.
