SIGNIFICANT progress towards the goal of increasing the number of Gaelic speakers is being made after a record number of students were recruited to teach the subject.

Language experts say they need to double the number of children entering Gaelic medium primary schools in the next six years in a bid to save the language and replace the 1000 speakers dying every year.
