Summary
Defending the indefensible can be motivated by good intentions but the high risk of greater damage in the long run makes it almost always a bad idea. The scandal currently engulfing Scottish football stemming from a simple refereeing error is a prime example.
Amid the confusion of angry, disappointed and self-seeking statements from those involved, there are two sentences on which the Scottish Football Association should focus. They come from Steven Craven, the assistant referee who resigned at the handling of a false statement in the referee's report of a match between Dundee United and Celtic. In explanation of his action and of his decision to referee amateur games, he said: "I love the game and refereeing is my hobby.
