Anniversary of 9/11 Is a Chance to Reflect On Other 'Crimes Against Humanity' and Their Consequences

Summary

AMERICANS have been vocal in recent weeks in their condemnation of Scotland's treatment of Abdelbaset Ali Mohmed al Megrahi. Robert Mueller, the director of the FBI, has even deemed it "a mockery of justice". American "exceptionalism", the self-assumed right to act as the world's policeman outside the jurisdiction of the International Criminal Court, drives the usual display of hypocrisy. In the 30-year campaign of terror and murder waged against British citizens by the IRA, heavily bankrolled by donations from the US, not a single IRA terrorist was extradited from the US to face charges here, despite repeated requests. These shenanigans obtained at all levels of US jurisdiction, including federal. I recall no minatory letters to The Herald then, even as Gaddafi helped fund the IRA.

On Friday, the carefully choreographed annual commemoration of 9/ 11 will dominate world media coverage. In a breathtaking piece of hyperbole, the historically illiterate Tony Blair described 9/11 as "the worst crime ever committed against humanity". 3000 people died. This hellish event has been given a new resonance and significance, since the Chilcot Inquiry is to take the July 1 2001 as its starting point in the "run-up" to the invasion of Iraq in March 2003. Thus 9/ 11 is conveniently captured by and umbilically linked to justify the invasion of Iraq, even though the latter had nothing to do with it. Saudi Arabia, on the other hand, had a lot to do with 9/11, with 15 of its denizens among those carrying out the attack, and many more Saudis, powerful pals of the Bush family, were whisked out of the USA by special jet planes within days of the attack on the Twin Towers and Pentagon.
