Summary

Renfrewshire Council's dilemma of whether to demolish its civic HQ reflects a paradox inherent in many modern icons. It is often assumed that a building must be "old" to be worth listing, but significance extends well beyond this, to touch on ethereal concepts such as cultural impact. The controversy that already surrounds this building hints at an importance which will not be easily resolved by hasty demolition. The HQ lies in the shadow of Paisley Abbey, yet it must be remembered that the abbey is largely a twentieth-century mock-up, albeit designed by Rowand Anderson.

Apart from Ferguslie Mills, Paisley's greatest loss was the former County Buildings (1820), now replaced by the Piazza shopping centre. Time may not be kind to Renfrewshire Council if it makes the same mistake twice, and demolishes its civic HQ once again.
