I RATHER thought that Ron Ferguson would not get away with his article about Richard Dawkins without being mauled by the militant atheist brigade, but Saturday's letters require a reply.

Alastair Runcie says that there is not a scintilla of evidence for the existence of God. Not everyone would agree. One could point to the incomprehensibly vast improbability of a universe such as ours coming into existence by chance; let alone that it should contain living creatures like us that have developed the ability to define 10-dimensional subatomic particles by differential calculus when our survival needs extend to little more than basic hunter- gathering.
