TALIBAN insurgents have been urging Afghan farmers to plant a record opium crop to help fund the war against British troops when they deploy to Helmand province next spring, according to military intelligence sources.

The farmers began sowing poppy seeds two weeks ago on the orders of rebel leaders, who plan to tax the yield to be converted into heroin and buy weapons and ammunition with the proceeds.
