Until Sept 5, 10am- 5pm (Thu until 7pm), Scottish National Portrait Gallery, Edinburgh, free, 0131 624 6200 With the skill of a 17th-century painter, the satirical eye of Hogarth or Dickens and a very 21st-century sense of humour, the Scottish painter Moyna Flannigan has set out to revive the lost skill of miniature painting. These tiny pictures were once the sole precious records of lovers, late-lamented wives and lost children, in a time of high mortality.

But photography took over and the art of the miniature became little more than a museum piece.
