AS a taxpayer, you would have to ask: what was the point? Two days after those who have a television had been able to watch the real thing live from the Musikverein in Vienna on BBC2, with the Vienna Philharmonic on sparkling form, conductor Lorin Maazel giving a moving speech of hope for the New Year, and well-integrated appeals formoney to help the victims of the disaster in the Indian Ocean, Scotland's national orchestra plays its waltz programme to a hall that's half empty. On Saturday, you can be sure that the marketing might of the Raymond Gubbay organisation, with tickets pitched slightly cheaper than the RSNO's and with more lavish staging, will attract rather larger numbers to its Johann Strauss Gala in the same venue.
