Summary
BUDAPEST FESTIVAL ORCHESTRA Brahms Symphony No. 1 Channel Classics L13.70 5/5
Ivan Fischer and his great Budapest Festival Orchestra have switched their attention from Mahler to Brahms. And what Brahms it is, in a glorious account of the First Symphony that has everything: massive drive and a supremely unhurried unfolding of the great work; exquisite sensitivity and fierce passion; deeply serious and analytical probing of the fathomless depths of the work; and yards of poise. The finale is blistering. The orchestra is immaculately moulded by Fischer while sounding natural and spontaneous. Coupled with a sumptuous account of the Haydn Variations and a delicious teaser of a Hungarian Dance as an aperitif, this is essential listening.See the full content of this document
