Rickets is a childhood disease that causes skeletal deformities - such as bow legs and curvature of the spine - as well as fractures and dental issues. It is caused by lack of sunlight and a poor diet and is commonly associated with the squalor of the Victorian era.

The disease disappeared in the UK after the Second World War, following the fortification of foods such as margarine and cereals with vitamin D.
