MY HEART sank when I read the latest news of house price rises in Scotland. The chief economist with the Halifax, Martin Ellis, drools over Scotland outperforming the rest of the UK. Indeed, the article is written in the normal triumphal way the press tend to report on house price rises. In the past 10 years my salary has risen a paltry 20-per cent. The value of my house has more than doubled. This is wonderful news to those who are moving "down the ladder", but for the rest it means shelling out proportionately more when we move. How will my kids be able to afford a starter flat in another 10 years when they are moving out?
