CLOTHING retailers saw their sales slump at the sharpest rate for 20 years during the crucial run-up to Christmas, industry figures revealed yesterday.

While the festive season on the UK's high streets did not turn out as badly as some had predicted, statistics from the Confederation of British Industry showed shoppers shunned fashion to splash out on food, drink, and household goods such as DVDs and televisions.
