EDINBURGH and Glasgow have formally ended centuries of rivalry by launching a farreaching collaboration strategy in an attempt to outf lank European competitors.

The "collaborate to compete" ethos of the cities has been fuelled by the resurgence of European cities such as Warsaw, Prague and Vilnius, and the competition generated by their respective countries' entry to the EU.
