TIME waits for no man, especially not Old Father Tyne. The queue outside Ottakars bookshop in Carlisle snakes halfway down the main street while, inside, Sir Bobby Robson furiously inscribes copies of his autobiography, Farewell but not Goodbye.

"Is that you? Come on, come on we're behind schedule, " he smiles, marshalling the queueing throng in courteous but firm terms. In an hour and a half's time he is due in Newcastle for another signing on his whistlestop tour. He is determined not to be late for that one.
