ALISON RODGER is a parttime NHS administrator, but after hearing of her selection for the shot putt at the European Team Championships in Portugal next weekend, she may have to schedule surgery for removal of the massive grin she is wearing.

The Kilbarchan athlete, only third in Britain this year, took advantage of the new Super8 contest on Wednesday evening in Cardiff where she beat the two women ranked above her. Yesterday she was awarded her debut senior British vest.
