HIS frosted breath places him firmly in the shadow of the icy Pentland Hills. But the faraway look in the eyes of the young Royal Scots soldier says he is already acclimatising to the heat and dangers of Iraq.

On the day it suffered its deadliest 24 hours for weeks - with violence claiming nearly 60 lives - about 500 Scottish soldiers readied themselves at their barracks to fly out to the troubled country.
