Summary
Last September, the RSAMD's BA course in Modern Ballet finally became a reality with the arrival of a first-year intake. Just how thoroughly integrated the students have now become was nicely demonstrated in the second half of this Piano Festival event when a score of musicians from the Keyboard and Collaborative Piano Department played (in a seamless rotation of soloists) Schumann's Carnaval and the dancers slipped on-stage to provide a visual accompaniment.
Before that, there were two mazurkas and a waltz from Chopin's Les Sylphides - a challenge for pianists and dancers, but well handled by everyone. Male soloist Mathew Topliss deserves special mention. He's already impressively light on his landings, has good body lines and the kind of focussed presence that holds the stage. Of course it's early days for this first group of dancers. But, like the almost-finished new studios at nearby Speirs Locks, there's plenty of future promise to applaud.See the full content of this document
