CALL charges from BT landlines and the cost of line rental could rise for people living in remote areas of Scotland if a proposal to remove price controls was implemented, a consumer watchdog warned yesterday.

While the deregulatory measures would either have little effect or even lower prices in towns and cities, they could result in an increase in charges for landline users in areas such as the Highlands and the Western Isles, according to Which? , the magazine of the Consumers' Association.
