THE Scottish classical music scene is buzzing with questions about composer Sally Beamish. What on earth is she up to? Has she lost the plot? Is she throwing it all away? Beamish, who has been asked if she's "selling out", admits she has become "obssessive", describes herself laughingly as "a creature possessed", and hints that, recently, she has probably driven her family up the wall.
What's it all about? Sally Beamish, the doyenne of composers living and working in Scotland, appears to have done a volte face in her spectacularly successful classical career. She has written a full-scale popular musical for the amateur theatre company in Gartmore, in Stirlingshire, where she lives. It's entitled Shenachie (Storyteller) and draws heavily on elements of Scottish traditional music and Gaelic song. A yarn with magical elements, humour, love, and poignancy, it is set against a backdrop of the Highland clearances and tells the story of a family forced to move on.
