ALEX Salmond has been accused of attempting to "deny democracy" after he said a Commons committee had no mandate to examine his plans for an independence referendum.

Opposition parties also attacked him for claiming that only the sole SNP MP on the Scottish Affairs Committee, Eilidh Whiteford, had a mandate to say anything about a referendum.
