THE farming industry is in the midst unprecedented change and many practitioners are quite simply unsure of how to react. The catalyst for this is the reform of the Common Agricultural Policy, effective from the beginning of this year.

The majority of farmers have opted not to change radically the basic nature of their business. That is a misguided attitude, according to James Graham, chief executive of the Scottish Agricultural Organisation Society - the body which for the last 100 years has helped farmers and rural industries to co-operate for the greater good.
