IF 18-year-old Wayne Rooney is the footballing revelation of Euro 2004, Nicolas Sarkozy might yet prove to be the political revelation of the new enlarged European Union.

Since April, the charismatic Sarkozy has been France's finance minister. Before that he was interior minister. His openly-admitted ambition is to succeed Jacques Chirac to the presidency of France in 2007. He says he even dreams of that day while shaving. Some are beginning to see him as the potential saviour of Europe's bruised and battered political dreams.
