JACK McConnell's flagship review of efficient government grossly exaggerated the level of savings it would achieve and presented misleading figures to the public, MSPs said yesterday.

In a stinging report, Holyrood's finance committee said the first minister's plan for streamlining bureaucracy had triple-counted government savings over the next three years, claiming to save Pounds1.7bn for reuse in front line services by 2008, when the true figure was only Pounds745m.
