I DO NOT share the relaxed attitude of Eric Wilkinson to the outcome of the experiment in Keith Grammar where youngsters sat their Standard Grade exams in S3 rather than in the more normal S4. The 17 percentage point difference between their pass rates and those of the S4 cohort is significant and cannot be dismissed as due to the natural variation between year groups.

Normally the best results in such a pilot are achieved in the first year because that is when everyone is focused on the project in hand, and working hard to make it succeed. Five years down the line, with normal working resumed, results usually start to drop off.
