Summary

THE marriage of Prince Charles and Mrs Parker Bowles shows every sign of degenerating into a Whitehall farce in every sense of the term. The blame for this rests firmly with those in the government - particularly Blair's former flatmate, Charlie Falconer, the present lord chancellor - who advised them that it would be possible for a member of the royal family to marry in a civil ceremony in England, a fact which flies in the face of several acts of parliament which govern the succession to the British throne.

The fact that there is still a lord chancellor gracing the Woolsack demonstrates Blair's kitchen cabinet's appalling ignorance of the niceties of our constitution. On his appointment to this great office of state, Falconer was meant to have overseen its abolition within a few months. This is yet another New Labour aspiration which has gone by the board when faced with hard reality.
