THOUSANDS of hunters armed with spiked clubs and rifles fanned out across the ice floes of Newfoundland at dawn yesterday as the largest seal hunt in half a century began.

The aim was to cull about 140,000 young harp seals within the next two days. In all, 350,000 seals are likely to be killed by the end of May.
