WITH Royal Troon toughening up to become a killing field for seeds at the Allied Surveyors Scottish Amateur Championship, the pre - tournament favourite, Gavin Dear, was hugely relieved to have scrambled his way into the third round.

The 25-year-old from Scone, part of Scotland's three-man team which won the amateur World Championship last year and of the six- man team that recently won the European Team Championships, praised opponent Thomas Rennie, who only got into this event as a late replacement.
