GEORGE W Bush last night announced plans to take Americans back to the moon and "forward into the universe".

At Nasa headquarters in Washington, the US president said the move represented a new course for the American space programme, but added that his vision was "a journey, not a race" and appealed to other nations to join the US in the spirit of co-operation.
