ITwas a day of deeply contrasting emotions in the Gaza Strip yesterday as Israeli security forces began a forced evacuation of Jewish settlements.

There was anger and resentment on the part of Jewish settlers, many of whom had spent the best part of their lives in the occupied territory. Barely concealed delight was evident on the part of Palestinians waiting to take their place on the territory after almost 40 years of occupation.
