THE loss of self-worth and the sense of hopelessness which Dr David Kelly faced in his final hours are typical of suicides which do not involve mental illness, an expert said yesterday.

Dr Alex Yellowlees, consultant psychiatrist and medical director of The Priory Hospital in Glasgow, said the scientist's "severe loss of self-esteem" and "the profound sense of hopelessness", identified by the Hutton inquiry are often the main reasons behind a number of suicides every year.
