BARN owls were badly hit by the snow and freezing conditions this winter, with a record number of birds that had been ringed by experts found dead in December.

But while conservationists at the British Trust for Ornithology (BTO) feared the trend would continue this month, the latest figures suggest barn owls that made it through the cold spell have been able to find food again.
