Summary

The road to sporting greatness is littered with the broken dreams of precociously talented individuals who never quite made it to the top. The line between dazzling success and failure is a fine one. The risk of landing on the wrong side is no reason for denying young people with the talent and drive in their sport of choice the chance to be all they can be. In golf, great, possibly unrealistic, expectations are bearing down on Michelle Wie, a 14-year-old from Hawaii who has become the first female to shoot under par over a round on the American PGA tour (at the Hawaiian Open). She has already been dubbed the next Tiger Woods. Tigress would be more appropriate, but, in a sport dominated by men, the male-specific moniker is no surprise.

Michelle appears destined soon to confront golf's greatest challenges. These do not come more demanding than the Open. This year's championship will be held at Royal Troon. The ambitions of Michelle and PJ, her father and manager, appear to know no bounds, especially after she went into the record books in Hawaii last week. She would like to test herself at Royal Troon. Consider the publicity boost for the event of a 14-year-old girl pitting herself against the course to compete for the championship. However, she cannot even reach go, far less pass it. Only males are allowed to enter the event. Scotland is the home of golf and boasts some of the finest courses in the world, but attitudes that have no place in modern Scotland prevail to deny an equal opportunity to women simply because of their gender. Think of the writs that would be flying and tribunal cases to be heard if this were any other area of life.
