ASAFA POWELL held up a spent cartridge and grinned like the man who had just shot the sheriff.

The Jamaican claimed the cartridge after he had lived up to his boast last night in the Norwich Union British Grand Prix at Gateshead, equalling the world record for the 100 metres with a time of 9.77 seconds. He set that a year ago this week in Athens, but has had to endure some American posturing since his arch-rival, Justin Gatlin, equalled that last month.
