Sheelagh Bramley, who died peacefully at St Andrew's Hospice, Airdrie, aged 82, was a well-known, loved and respected figure in the local community around Bellshill, Lanarkshire, where she had been the matron of the maternity hospital from 1957 until 1984.

She was born Sheelagh Patricia Olive Bramley on January 11, 1922 in Westminster, the fourth and youngest child of Frank and Alice Bramley. They emigrated to Canada and moved to Detroit, USA, before the First World War but returned to England in 1915, with Frank serving at Gallipoli and on the Western Front. After serving his country Frank experienced considerable periods of unemployment in the years that followed, during Sheelagh's childhood.
