The greatest comfort for St Mirren came from elsewhere. Dundee United's late equaliser at Hamilton, which prevented the bottom team from closing the gap on the Paisley side by anything more than a point, was an act of solace. At this stage of the season, when every outcome seems charged with significance, small margins feel emphatic, but even in losing at Rugby Park there were reasons for Danny Lennon, the St Mirren manager, to feel optimistic.

Two goals in front by the break, Kilmarnock were worthy winners. Yet the visitors grasped the initiative in the second half when they might instead have been sullen and wary, and this refusal to be downcast will be central to their attempt to avoid relegation.
