DEATH and mayhem swept across Iraq yesterday in one of the bloodiest and most turbulent days since Saddam Hussein lost power.

Violent demonstrations throughout the day were followed by fierce clashes with Shi'ites in Baghdad in which seven US soldiers were killed and 24 injured, a US military spokesman said. Militiamen had tried and failed to take over police stations and government buildings using small arms and grenade launchers.
