RARELY have ventilation systems proved so contentious. The humble air extraction fan, and its hotly-disputed benefits to workers' lungs, was just one of the subjects to come under fire yesterday when health professionals clashed with the licensing trade in the Scottish Executive's official consultation on a smoking ban.

Cries of "nonsense", "rubbish", and the occasional "get real" were flung across the conference room at the Royal Concert Hall in Glasgow as more than 100 publicans, health consultants, union leaders and concerned non-smokers debated whether to introduce a ban on smoking in public places: namely, pubs.
