THE leader of Scotland's Catholics smuggled a tartan scarf in his cassock for Pope Benedict to wear as he toured Edinburgh with him in the Popemobile.

Cardinal Keith O'Brien, who wore a scarf himself, made the concealment to ensure the official St Ninian's Day Papal Visit tartan was worn by the pontiff, just in case he was not allowed to take the scarves inside the Palace of Holyroodhouse.
