Summary

HARRY Reid's article (July 20) on redefining nationalism ought to stimulate a very appropriate debate for the present circumstances of the Scottish National Party, particularly on the idea of the party changing its name. I am not convinced that a change is necessary. Mr Reid likes "Scotland's Party" which Michael Russell suggested some time ago. The SNP has used that term as a kind of by-name in more than one period in the past 40 years, so I expect that it will be already familiar to many.

In April 1966 in a post-general election report to the party's national executive committee, I put up for discussion (among other proposals) the suggestion that the national conference (of that year) should consider the possibility of changing or adding to the title of the party in order to put less emphasis on nationalism and more on democracy. But the proposal was too late for the 1966 conference. (Scotland Lives, Reprographia, Edinburgh 1973, pages 82- 83.) I do not recall the subject being raised again until Michael Russell's proposal much more recently.
